Go to India for services and to China for manufacturing has been the mantra of the global bigwigs. This is fast changing with India finally waking up to the manufacturing opportunity.
The cheap cost of labor as well as the vast domestic market has always favored this segment. However, the country had missed out on manufacturing opportunity because it could not sustain on-time deliveries and high levels of quality. This coupled with lack of entrepreneurial self confidence as well as industrial investment ensured the segment remained in doldrums. This is no longer the case with a number of global giants like Nokia, LG and Motorola making India their manufacturing base. Honda Motors, Ford Motors, Hyundai Motors, ABB, Schneider and Honeywell are some of the other global big wigs who are either opening a manufacturing unit in the country or are shifting their manufacturing base to India.
A recent FICCI study revealed that India attracted an average FDI of $3.4 bn per year in the manufacturing sector for the period January 2000 to September 2008. Though it is miniscule when compared to China’s FDI of $40 bn in a single year, it is also true that the industry has started to give cut-throat competition to China and in the time to come it is likely to emerge as a major contributor to the country’s GDP
